Construction Law Subject Matter Expert / Online Instructor
About the role
VDCI builds practical, employer-aligned courses for people working in construction and the built environment. We are developing a new Construction Law course and looking for the subject matter expert to teach it.
This is not a lecture-hall job. You will work with our instructional design team to build a self-paced online course, then record the video that carries it. We handle the structure, the platform, the editing and the assessments. You bring the expertise and you appear on camera.
The audience is project managers, superintendents, estimators, tradespeople and career changers. They are not lawyers and they never will be. The course teaches them to recognize where they are exposed, what a clause actually does to them, and when to stop and call counsel.
What you will do
Work with our learning design team to shape the course outline and learning objectives
Provide source material: outlines, examples, sample contract language, real scenarios
Record roughly 60 to 90 short video lessons, each 5 to 7 minutes, from your own space
Review quiz questions, exercises and student assignments we draft from your material
Answer our questions during production and confirm anything we have interpreted
Topics the course will cover
Contract types, delivery methods, and what documents actually form the contract
Payment: retainage, pay-if-paid, prompt payment, and lien waivers
Mechanics liens, notices and deadlines
Entitlement to extra time and extra money, including notice provisions and differing site conditions
Risk transfer: indemnity, additional insured, and bonds
Records, claims and dispute resolution
What we are looking for
Required:
Substantial professional experience in construction law or construction contracts and claims
Ability to explain a legal concept to somebody with no legal background, in plain language
Comfortable on camera and able to record clean audio and video from a quiet space
Reliable communication and the ability to hit agreed delivery dates
Strongly preferred:
Licensed attorney with a construction practice
Background on both the owner side and the contractor side
Prior teaching, training or CLE presenting experience
What this role is not
You will not be giving legal advice to students, and the course carries an explicit statement to that effect. You are teaching people to recognize issues, not to handle them.

Compensation: $30-$40/per hour
